I just recently did a presentation on this subject. Here is an approximation of the first slide:
- An XML Database –
- It stores XML
documents, each associated with a
unique URI within its own database
(typically the URI is like a file
path, spelled from root)
- a MarkLogic
server has multiple databases, each
with its own set of documents and
their URI’s
- An XQuery engine - for
retrieving and manipulating data by evaluating
“modules” (a module is a file or
document containing XQuery code,
typically with the suffix .xqy)
- A Server Platform - Hosts HTTP, WEBDAV,
and XDBC servers, which can be
configured from the administration
panel
This answer could be much, much longer, but that's a basic overview.

I second Miles' answer and would like to include
* Mark Logic is also a power text search engine
Mark Logic also has some unique features; querying against the db as it existed at some past times, reverse querying and alerting to name a few.
Miles and I have both worked with MarkLogic.
