Difference between CM and SCM

When working on Cobalt, we work with the CM group, however other parts of the company work with SCM for version control/builds/etc. What is the functional difference between these groups?

SCM stands for Software Configuration Management. SCM teams are responsible for the software assets of a product from Development to Production; whereas, a Configuration Management (CM) teams are also responsible for the software assets, but also the hardware and infrastructure assets of the product. In both teams, they perform the below practices, but SCM focuses on Software; whereas, CM includes HW as well.

- Establish and maintain Configuration Management System (e.g. TFS, Anthill Pro, Builds, Deployments)
- Track and Control configuration items (e.g. Change Requests (CMDB, Database) and code changes)
- Establish records (e.g. Change logs, reports, history of changes)
