How to create new VitalSigns widgets
Ryan Morlok
How can one create new widgets for the Vital signs pages? Both from the technology side and the who to talk to side. I'd be interested in having widgets that monitor Cobalt module-specific, environment specific builds so that I can have a central page to easily see what builds are failing.

Currently, the first step to getting new widgets on the MyVitalSigns pages is to contact the mailing group tclovitalsignsadministrator@thomsonreuters.com with the request for the new widgets; this is likely to change in the future to send requests of this nature from MyVitalSigns directly. From there, the time it would take for the widget to become available would largely depend on the request. For example, the request above sounds very similar to the Build/Deploy widget for Web2 but for Cobalt modules instead; however, VitalSigns does not currently collect that type of data for Cobalt, so we would need to create harvesters to collect and store that data.

Thanks Martin. Is there any move to make the platform more open so that developers could make things for themselves and just have a central place to use as their dashboard? Also, with regards to the harvesters, checking the status of Cobalt builds can be done through TFS web services (I think), is there a way to make widgets that pull their data directly from somewhere else that doesn't have to be harvested?

Or perhaps the converse, is it possible to get the data used by the widgets on VitalSigns as REST services so we could build our own dashboards with the same data from VitalSigns (plus add our own widgets however we want)?

The first suggestion of making the site more open has been talked about; however, the issue is that the framework for widgets is too tightly bound to the application code so it would be a large task to rewrite large portions of it to separate the application from the framework so it's unlikely to be in the near term. To the second suggestion of making the data REST services, most of the Cobalt data we collect is from the PerfAPI site, which I believe are RESTful services, it would seem redundant for much of our Cobalt data.
