I’m a beginner and aiming to become proficient in LSEG SDK APIs, RTDS (Real-Time Distribution System), and Refinitiv Workspace. I’ve chosen Java as my programming language and would appreciate guidance on the following:

1. Where should I start as a complete beginner?
   • Any recommended learning path or sequence for understanding RTDS, LSEG Workspace, and SDK APIs?
2. Are there official tutorials, videos, or sample projects for EMA and ETA in Java?
   • I have access to documentation like EMAJ_DevGuide.pdf, EMAJ_Examples.pdf, and ETAJ_DevGuide.zip, but I need practical examples.
3. How do I practically learn RTDS components (ADS, ADH, DACS) and integrate them with SDK APIs?
   • Any resources or hands-on labs for ADS configuration and entitlement management?
4. What’s the best sequence for learning Refinitiv Workspace, Excel Add-in, and RDP APIs?
   • Should I start with Workspace basics or jump into API integration first?
5. Best practices for setting up a development environment (Java + Maven + RTSDK)?
   • Any tips for installation, configuration, and troubleshooting?

Where should I start as a complete beginner?

For the RTSDK Java, you can refer to the product page on the LSEG Developer Community. The product page contains documents and tutorials.

For the LSEG Data Libraries that can retrieve data through the LSEG Workspace desktop session, we don't provide the Java version. We provide Python, Typescript, and .NET libraries.

For the RDP APIs which support REST, you can refer to the product page which contains documents, postman example, and tutorials. You can start with the postman example. Then, you can use the Postman to create snippet code in Java. For more information, please refer to this Generate code for a REST API call using Postman in just a few clicks article.

For RTDS, you need to know their features and configurations. However, this forum focuses on APIs so you need to refer to the RTDS product page on LSEG MyAccount or the LSEG Learning Centre.

Are there official tutorials, videos, or sample projects for EMA and ETA in Java?

The tutorials are on the product page. The sample code projects are in the package and on GitHub.

How do I practically learn RTDS components (ADS, ADH, DACS) and integrate them with SDK APIs?

As this forum focuses on the APIs, you need to refer to the RTDS documents, learning centre, or product support team. For the APIs to connect to RTDS to consume data, you need to know a hostname or IP Address of ADS, TCP port (14002) listened by ADS, username, service name, and RICs, as shown in the example code.

What’s the best sequence for learning Refinitiv Workspace, Excel Add-in, and RDP APIs?

It depends on your purposes. If you would like to develop applications, you can start with APIs.

Best practices for setting up a development environment (Java + Maven + RTSDK)?

The RTDSK Java is available as a downloadable package and it is also on GitHub and Maven. Please refer to this How to Set Up Real-Time SDK Java Application with Maven article. However, you need to use it on the supported operating systems and compilers. Please refer to the API Compatibility Matrix.
