I assume a user in the same group as an API user will be able to view all the cases created within the group, yes?

Yes, for example in the World-Check-One App I can view cases that are modified and/or assigned by user(s) in my group. In "Case Management" you can select "Assignee" and "Modified By" to filter the user cases you want to see.
